Carotid endarterectomy, or CEA, is a surgical procedure that removes plaque buildup or atherosclerosis in the carotid artery and improves blood flow to the brain. Carotid endarterectomy can be performed on both sides at once or one side at a time if needed.

Carotid endarterectomy, or CEA, is a surgical procedure that removes plaque buildup or atherosclerosis in the carotid artery and improves blood flow to the brain. Carotid endarterectomy can be performed on both sides at once or one side at a time if needed for medical reasons. With a CEA, you can surgically restore blood flow to your brain and stop symptoms of a carotid artery blockage before they start.

CEA can be performed onsite at AVVA.

The carotid arteries are located on either side of the neck and carry blood to the brain. When these arteries become blocked with plaque, they may cause symptoms such as stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), which is like a stroke but does not result in permanent damage. These blockages can also cause high blood pressure. Stroke, TIA and/or high blood pressure can be the first signs of a carotid artery blockage.

If you have carotid artery blockage, you may feel:

-Pain in the neck or jaw

-Ringing in the ears

-Numbness on one side of the face or body

-Weakness on one side of the body

-Slurred speech

-Difficulty swallowing

-Headache

-Dizziness or vertigo

If you start experiencing any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately—do not drive yourself to the hospital! If you have any questions about carotid artery blockage or CEA, please contact us at (601) 895-2923.
