Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

Introduction

If you are suffering from the pain and discomfort of varicose veins, you may be interested in endovenous laser treatment (EVLT). This is a minimally invasive procedure that works well for removing stubborn varicose veins. It's also known as "laser ablation" or "laser therapy."

What is a varicose vein?

Varicose veins are a common condition that cause swollen, twisted veins to form. Varicose veins can be painful or just unsightly, depending on their severity. They often form because of damage to the valves inside your veins that prevent blood from flowing backward as it returns to your heart. Since the blood doesn’t flow correctly, it forms a pooling in the veins, causing expansion or twisting of the vein, which can hinder circulation of the blood.

When you have varicose veins:

  • Your legs may feel heavy and tired.
  • You'll notice bulges under the skin.
  • You may experience burning, cramping, itching, or throbbing in the legs, and some may experience restless leg syndrome.

Most varicose veins will not compromise your health, however, if you experience pain or notice swelling or discoloration in your lower extremities, consult with your physician. These symptoms may be a sign of a more serious condition.

How does EVLT work?

Endovenous laser treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to destroy a vein. The heat from the laser causes a thrombosis (clotting) in the vein, which stops blood flow and makes the varicose vein shrink and disappear.

The procedure lasts about an hour and can be done on an outpatient basis in our office. It only requires a small incision and patients can usually resume normal activities immediately. Your physician may schedule a follow-up appointment approximately one week after your procedure to perform an ultrasound to ensure no clots have formed where the vein was treated. Veins do not return after treatment.
