Laser Therapy Q & A

Arteries transport oxygen-rich blood from your heart to the rest of your body. Veins are the blood vessels that carry the “used” blood back to your heart for a circulatory refill on oxygen and other necessary nutrients.

Varicose veins develop when vein walls weaken and tiny one-way valves within the vessel fail to function normally. This disrupts the flow of blood toward the heart and causes it to pool in the vein, which leads to the visible bulging, twisting, and discoloration common with varicose veins.

These problematic veins can occur anywhere but are most common in the legs, where blood must work against gravity to make its way back to the heart.

Once a varicose vein develops, there is no way to improve or restore its normal function. Instead, the vein must be removed to eliminate the cosmetic effects and physical symptoms associated with varicose veins.

In the past, a surgical procedure known as vein stripping was used to remove a varicose vein. However, modern vein treatments use various techniques such as chemical substances (sclerosing agents) or medical adhesive to seal varicose veins and close them off from their blood supply. This causes the vein to die.

Your body reabsorbs the tissue debris left by the destroyed vein and reroutes blood flow to a nearby healthy vein. Rather than chemicals, laser therapy uses heat produced by light energy to effectively shrink and seal the varicose vein.

Laser therapy, also known as endovenous thermal ablation, is a minimally invasive treatment that’s performed at Advanced Vascular & Vein Associates for your convenience.

It’s an endovascular treatment that requires just one very small needle-size incision to insert a long, thin tube (catheter) into the vein. The catheter houses the laser fiber that supplies the energy required to seal the vein.

Advanced ultrasound imaging ensures accuracy during laser therapy, and topical anesthesia used to numb the puncture site prevents discomfort. The treatment generally takes less than an hour, and the incision is small enough that sutures aren’t necessary.

Compared with vein stripping and other ablative vein treatments, laser therapy is quick and generally requires less recovery time. You may notice mild bruising after the procedure, but this usually fades quickly.
